A victim's tribute

In a small town, nestled deep in the woods,

Lies a dark chapter in its history, misunderstood.

A time of fear, suspicion and pain,

Where accusations led to loss and shame.

Whispers in air, whispers of hate,

Of women deemed strange and of an unnatural state.

No evidence needed, just a word or two,

Their fate sealed, what else could they do?

Hanged or pressed, their lives taken away,

All for the crime of being accused in the light of day.

A tale of sorrow, a tale of despair,

Of a time when reason and logic were not to be found anywhere.

Hysteria and fear clouded the minds of men,

And left behind a legacy of pain and heartache, again and again.

The screams of the accused still echoing in the night,

The tears of the bereaved still shining bright.

Innocent lives lost, all for the sake of fear,

Families torn apart, year after year.

Women and children, accused of a heinous crime,

Their only guilt being in the eyes of the accusers all the time.

It's a heart-wrenching tale, a story of woe,

A time when justice was blind, and the truth was never known.

So let us remember, this time of tragedy,

And vow to never let fear cloud our judgment, for all eternity.
