Saddened by the News

It is hard to hear the news today

when lives can change so fast

a storm can come from far away

and leave a shadow that will last.

The power went and darkness came

while people waited there

not knowing what the night would bring

or what was waiting in the air.

Then came the news of someone gone

and suddenly it felt so real

a life that should have carried on

a loss that no one wants to feel.

The wind can make the strongest shake

the sea can turn so wild

and somewhere someone stays awake

beside a frightened child.

We watch the pictures on the screen

and wonder what we would do

if all the things we knew were gone

and nothing felt the same to you.

A name becomes a memory

a face becomes a thought

and all the little things they did

are suddenly all that family has got.

I think about the ones who loved

the person who is gone

and how they have to face the days

when they have to carry on.

No warning can prepare the heart

for news that comes like this

one moment life is carrying on

the next is someone is sadly missed.

So tonight I think of them

and hope they find some peace

because grief can be a heavy thing

that does not simply cease.

The storm will pass and skies will clear

the waters will grow still

but some things cannot be repaired

no matter how we will it too.

I hope they are not alone

may love stay close around them

until their hearts feel able to cope.
