Negative Space

Your worn sweater still hangs in back of our closet

along with your old sailors cap

I just can't seem to part with it

or get rid of any of that

I set the table for us, a placement of two

and fill your cup up with your favorite brew

Then pour it down the sink and put it back on the shelf

I'm just not the same, in this house, by myself

I place the remote on the arm of your chair

forgetting for a moment that you're no longer there

To flip through the channels and argue what to watch

I never imagined I could miss you this much

I stare out the window imagining where you are

and make the same wishes we made on those old stars

I climb into bed never disturbing your side

and that's how it's been since you told me goodbye

Reading through the paper to see who else has gone

the obit reminds me that my days won't be long

Until I hold you again and my heart is made whole

and we'll walk hand in hand on those streets made of gold

So, as sad as I am, I still have that to hold on to

the memories we made keep on pushing me through

Until the moment arrives when my eyes close for good

and the world goes on, just the way that it should
