I saw him walking along the roses,
All alone with his tears
With the air of the night whispering to him,
Chasing away his fears
As his eyes trailed away to the lady next door
Who loved to buy roses even though she was poor
She felt the roses through the essence of her soul
And sometimes she found the courage to go home
Because when she was with him, she knew she was not alone
Sometimes she arrived with a smile on her face
Because even when she was scared, she loved the thrill of the chase
She did not notice the looks full of love from the man who sold her roses
And if only she did
She did not know what he hid
But she felt odd comfort when she looked into his eyes
And how she felt like she did not have to lie
But she did not know what feelings he kept locked away
And he knew that forever his feelings would stay
Hidden from the heart of the one that he loved
Hidden from the one he constantly thought of
He watched her glide along the bushes of roses
And remembered when she loved him so long ago
Remembered a time when he did not fear his own shadow
When all the time in the world was theirs
When everything in the world was fair
Thinking back on these times made his heart break in half
Because sometimes he is just too sad to laugh
Because all of these memories cause him so much grief
And even if his time with her was brief
Just one touch kept him entranced for weeks
And now he watches her from afar
Watches her cry from the new flame that took her away
Wishing things had been different
Wishing she had stayed
And suddenly his heart can’t take any more of this pain
It seems as if all of this love and hate was all in vain
And in a fit of rage he destroys all of the roses all his sight
And his cries of distress disintegrate into the night
And now he stands in the garden all alone
Feeling as if his heart has turned into stone
And finally she decides to return to the one who loved her the most
But as she steps foot into his garden
She sees him — no, feels him, stone cold frozen
He had left her, as she’d done to him
All alone among the destroyed roses.
