She looks in reverse,

examining with magnifying glass,

combing through the years

with fine teeth,

pulling at the threads of should have,

could have.

***

But I remember the smell of home,

warm chocolate and brown sugar

fresh from the oven

served by hands that waited

to hold our days story.

***

I remember the weight of patience

the stillness that made room

for falling tears,

and hearts that needed mending.

***

I remember delicate hands,

hemming the fray

with a reassuring touch,

moonlight caught in the kitchen's rhythm,

recipes passed like smuggled treasures,

and waffles at midnight

served on fine China,

***

I remember how you taught me

that tea can cure the weary days,

to plant myself where I would bloom,

to keep a light in the window

until someone makes it home.

***

I show you my reflection,

trim away those loose threads,

and hold you with the proof

of all that I am,

whispering,

"you were enough"
