The pond water was frigid as I wiggled my toes.
It climbed to my ankles, pleading for me to come in.
On the lustrous surface of the placid water
I could see a girl peering back at me,
her skin fair,
her eyes dazzling with starlight.
She was laughing.
Her smile embraced the whole world.
The sun glinted onto her face as she danced across the water.
I picked up a pebble,
turning it leisurely against my calloused palm.
Flicking my wrist, I let it slip out of my quaking fingers,
but it only skipped once before disappearing.
The image of the girl shattered like a broken mirror.
All I could see
was two weary eyes
on face that hurt to look at,
a girl with the mind of a stormy sea.
sinking into the ripples.
