Red: The Love Poems by Leah James

Like the Sea

You are just like the sea

rushing into shores

then drawing back

like its waves.

It would take the earth

to tame you;

for you are wilder than

the plain.

Holding life inside you

that’s mostly cold-blooded;

you forget

the ones with blood warm -

how they need to come up

for light.

Light… you cannot give,

but that the Sun

provides.

Faithfully it rises,

faithfully it sets,

faithfully it still gives

while sharing with the moon

as an emblem of love.

Yet, the sea -

it knows nothing of love;

only moves in it.

At each layer, every depth

it grows darker

And darker...

You are like the sea

moving in and out of shores,

lured by the pull of love's gravity

with waves finding nowhere to rest

You rise when the sky cries of

your shifting ways...

you crest.

You break in

where the wind carries you.

When the tide falters to its power,

you, the sea, merely await the hour

where the salt within you

will finally melt away.

And, your waters,

no longer sour,

can sleep

as the fire

of judgment

burns you still.
