I wonder when I'll hear the news,

how long it will take before we reach the inevitable

our car, the one you took back home when you left me,

wrapped around a telephone pole;

your confidence behind the wheel never wavered

not after countless drinks

not with a phone in your hand

not while you yelled at me seated next to you, eyes off the road.

I used to wonder when I would face a new kind of mourning,

but these days, all I worry for is the day the car payment comes around,

the day I'll be stuck with it,

& that happens more often than not regardless.

sad poetry
