Reaching

But Never Grasping

I am the waves

Reaching for the shore

But crashing long before

The sand is even in sight

I am the acrobat who

Lunges for the swing but

Is too far away to even

Graze it with her fingertips

I am the person drowning

In quicksand but still struggling

As if she has any hope of

Breaking free

I am the diver

Falling towards

An empty swimming pool

And ruthless concrete

Knowing she will shatter

At the bottom

I am the girl

Who loves you

Even while knowing

You cannot love her back
