Rainbow Soul

Embracing the colour within...

By Diana McLarenPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

Born to the world with a rainbow in her soul

She feared that others would somehow know

With layers of black, she masked who she was

Hoping to blend into the faceless us

Already she knew her differences were many

For others had told her she stood out unpleasantly

This was just one more way she differentiated from the norm

But it was an easy one to hide from the gazes that said she was wrong

Years she spent in the rain not letting her soul shine bright

For fear of the way the droplets would catch the light

She hid her colors away from the world

Taking them out in private to remind her who she was

Hidden beneath layers of what she thought they wanted to see

She noticed that many eyes still judged her way of being

Hard as she tried she couldn’t find a way to blend

Into the safety of indistinguishable them

Her colors were leaking out for the world to see

All her hiding wasn’t changing a single thing

Dulling her hues didn’t hide her from anyone’s eyes

It only made her feel less alive

So one day when she was older but not grey

She decided to stop asking if she may

She put down her umbrella and turned on her light

The beam shining so that she could no longer hide

Blue were the eyes that gazed upon her new way of life

Red were the lips that spoke her truth for the first time

Green was the heart that now had a chance to love

White was the skin that finally felt freedom

With these three basic colors and the white to make them bright

She started painting rainbows on everything in her life

She scared away the shadows so that others could come out

And she made for herself a life of which she could feel proud
