Rainbow Lyricism

"The rest of the world was black and white, but we were in screaming color."

This poem is a compilation of references to color in Taylor Swift's music. I chose this approach for two reasons.

First, Moleskine provides "blank spaces" for creative expression (get it?). For me, that expression is in the form of writing. When I think of descriptive writing, Taylor Swift's lyrics immediately come to mind. With just a few words, she can tell the most vivid of stories. Her songs are full of detail and imaginative uses of color.

And second, in June of 2019, Swift released "You Need to Calm Down," a fun, pride-positive bop condemning bigotry and hate. The song's colorful music video starred prominent members of the LGBTQIA+ community and ended with a call for equality and petition for Swift's fans to sign.

Basically, she's creative (Moleskine), colorful (True Colors Challenge), and an active champion of equal rights (Pride Month!). And my obsessive, undying love for her is what makes me unique.

Bear with me, kind judges. I haven't written poetry since seventh grade.

Crimson red lips, rosy cheeks, scarlet letters

Pray to holy orange bottles that soon you’ll get better

Golden leaves, golden strings, golden tattoos and skies

Golden gates, golden cage, a gold rush we don't like

Green eyes and blue ones and indigo, too

Black ties and white veils, hearts borrowed and blue

Skies that are light pink, then amber, dark gray

A man and his white horse who showed up too late

The red hair of a best friend, green light of forgiveness

Little white lies that escape through black lipstick

Green grass, teal shirts, ocean waves of clear blue

Red names on a list—look what you made us do!

Old faded blue jeans and little black dresses

Heartfelt "I'm sorry"s to sweet, tan-skinned exes

Towns painted blue, dogs dyed key lime green

Our love fading into the gray of old tea

We thought love was red, turns out that it's golden

And hate will turn blue skies to black like it's storming

But if Tay's taught me one thing, gray skies are okay,

'Cause shade never made anybody less gay!
