Queen Caffeine

An Ode to Coffee

Dark sweetness has its dangerous allure

It promises to make you safe and pure

Fit for enduring your boss’s blunt scorn

Able to repair your dignity, torn

Taking orders with meek obedience

Acting on them with bland expedience

Makes one crave inky warmth and more power

To count toward a shift’s final hour

Glorious coffee, antidote to late

Tired or angry or grieving, you wait

For the sweet, stimulating, sultry cup

Many her guises, this sovereign of up

She fills your mouth when you've nothing to say

She makes dull routine a sweet game to play

She reigns universally, no rival can rise

Without her assistance, which she denies

She makes of mourning mere morning, benign

Drinking her darkness allows you to shine
