Promises Out Of Thin Air

You hold me like a promise and use me like a knife

Seems the only time we feel is when it hurts

We carelessly play with the fire

and act surprised when we get burned

Wearing the scent of conquest like bottled perfume

*

We masquerade in smoke clouds

under skies, billowing black

Wearing the smell of love around us like a shroud

*

Never knowing where we're going

or if we're ever coming back

Till all that's left to show

are small fractures and cracks

So we quickly plaster and repair

pretending they were never there

As tingles of trepidation scar our backs

dodging emotions lined with fear

While still collecting all the facts

continuing to celebrate from year to year

*

If an observation could be made

I'd rather listen to the wind

Than watch you disengage, while sharpening your blade

I should have listened when you said

we would be better off as friends

And release the love pretending not to hate
