Prisoner of Love

Which way is left to go when a man has had enough

Prisoner Of Love

I knew a man who married for love,
And thought he’d found his dream,
But little did he realise,
Things weren’t what they seemed.
He gave his heart so willingly,
Believing love was true,
But behind the doors of happiness,
A darker shadow grew.

He lived a life of silence,
Where laughter slowly died,
A prisoner in his own home,
With nowhere left to hide.
The woman he had married,
Held the keys to all his fears,
And every day he spent with her,
Was another day of tears.

There were no bars upon his windows,
No chains around his feet,
Yet every time he tried to leave,
He suffered in defeat.
For prisons aren’t just buildings,
With walls of brick and stone,
Sometimes they’re made of broken love,
Where hearts are left alone.

He looked into the mirror,
At the stranger standing there,
A man who once had dreams of love,
Now drowning in despair.
His eyes were like two prison cells,
His soul was locked away,
And all the things he once believed,
Were slowly turning grey.

He wondered where his life had gone,
Where all the years had flown,
How love could turn a happy man,
Into someone unknown.
He’d given her his everything,
His loyalty and pride,
But somewhere in that marriage,
The man he was had died.

One morning he awakened,
And watched the rising sun,
He knew the time had finally come,
His suffering must be done.
He couldn’t spend another year,
Pretending things were right,
Or live beneath the shadows,
Of another lonely night.

He packed away his memories,
And closed the bedroom door,
He knew that he could never be,
The man he’d been before.
But somewhere in the distance,
A little hope remained,
A chance to find the happiness,
That once his heart contained.

He walked towards the daylight,
With tears upon his face,
Leaving all the heartache,
Of that unhappy place.
He didn’t know what waited,
Beyond the prison gate,
But freedom was worth fighting for,
Before it was too late.

And slowly he discovered,
The beauty of being free,
To laugh without permission,
And be who he could be.
No longer someone’s prisoner,
No longer living lies,
The bars that held his spirit,
Had vanished from his eyes.

So never let another,
Imprison who you are,
Or make you feel that happiness,
Is something much too far.
For love should never be a prison,
Or a sentence from above,
And no one should spend a lifetime,
As a prisoner of love.
