Painting by Cindus Henry

I stumbled into an artist’s apartment,

the door was mostly open,

on an easel, I saw a completed piece.

A wide-eyed cat, startled by my presence, knocked over a coke bottle which hit the floor and spilled.

A fire truck raced by in the distance;

there wasn't anyone in the apartment at all.

Where had the artist gone?

There was a floral smell in the air

and I wondered what it was exactly.

I stepped toward the painting,

sniffing the canvas impulsively.

The floral smell was coming from the canvas.

Scented paint?

I walked toward the kitchen and there was a bowl of fruit on the table.

Taking a banana,

peeling it, I started to eat it as it had been several days since I had eaten.

Walking out the door of the apartment,

I closed the door.

Quietly, I said thank you aloud for the banana that I had stolen,

and for the glimpse of the floral smelling canvas painting.
