Play Pretend

Prompt 6/21/2025

Top Story - June 2025

Glittering fairies danced in morning light,

born of dust bunnies

snoozing beneath couch cushions by day.

We tried to catch them,

clapping our syruped hands together with giggles.

We stacked endless plastic bricks,

popsicles stacked like rainbow towers,

licking the cherry flavored air around them

as we chased paper dragons down the hall,

their tails made of stars.

We lay in the tall summer grass,

toes waving in the breeze with the blades,

spinning cotton candy,

from the pink feathers of clouds

wafting by in a dreamsicle sky.

We followed the green sparks of evening wisps,

making wishes in hushed runes,

smiley hearts scribbled on our palms -

washable marker henna.

We count the sails of pirate ships,

on pillows, pulling the sheets tight,

welcoming waves of slumber

to set us adrift in the land of nod,

praying tomorrow,

if we're lucky,

we'll dream together,

again.
