people don't change
and that isn't some pessimistic proclamation
individuals change over time
and if they don't they get stuck
humanity has never changed
we crave connection
we pursue what makes us happy
we love a good laugh
we chase dreams
we constantly create
we tell stories
we feel the same emotions
we live the same lives
over and over
only the surroundings change
maybe that is why history repeats itself
why teenagers will always rebel
why there will always be conflicts
why we will always debate right and wrong
why we will always enforce the norms of the day
because we like the predictability of it
if we learn from our mistakes
too much will change
we don't know how to live with the unknown
so we avoid getting better
it's more comfortable at home
death is what we fear
because we don't like endings
we do everything we can to forget
that one day our lives end

Doing it for the troops
The others dropped like flies around me. We fought and struggled to get to this point. I'm the only one left now. The objective is right there. A mere two hundred feet away. The last of my team got a bullet to the head right next to me, but I couldn't do anything. I was able to locate and neutralise the sniper as he shot my friend, so his death was at least not in vain.
