I do not want my parents to fear that when I leave for school in the morning that they have to hold me tight because it might be the last time.
But unless things change
they always will.
I do not want my friends to cry when they see my picture in the yearbook because the smile on my face is so different from the last time they saw me: clothed in white and asleep for eternity.
But unless things change
they might.
I do not want to send my own kids out into the world with bulletproof backpacks and knowledge that they should never need and anxiety medication (because like their mother they see death around every corner).
But unless things change
I will have to.
