we've all got bruises, she said

hiding just under the skin

a wounded tone on her breath

where blood settles and pools

*

but that's nothing, she says

like the way that it stings

it’s a slow coming death

as her taut skin snags and pulls

*

tiny little cuts

that slide through the surface

slowly adding up

though sightless and obscure

*

absorbed in every vein

where the burning begins

the slightest notion gets in

like a wolf in sheep's clothes

*

no one knows what's unseen

until it peaks from the closet

deep purple and greens

a secret tucked in a pocket

*

now out on display

exposed by the light

no words can erase

moments those fuses ignite

*
once contoured and concealed

life’s autopsy exposes

scars beautifully kept discrete

hiding the thorns in the roses
