Origin Story

Where we come from

Goes beyond our occupations, our hometowns, our households

Beyond our parents, grandparents, family name

Beyond gaining rights and famous speeches and breaking slave chains

Beyond auction blocks and long rides on shameful ships

Beyond motherlands and crowns and mysterious treasures underground

Beyond years and generations and sand and stars

Where we come from

Starts with a word….a breath….a thought

From the Creator of all things

The Originator of every good and perfect gift

The Diety, Great Spirit, God

Had the idea to capture the sun’s warmth

In skin and the stars’ burning light in eyes

And the arch of hills and valleys in hips

And the waves of oceans in steps

And the song of wind through the trees in voices

And evidence of sheer genius in fingerprints

And His undeniable existence in an image

Where we come from

Speaks from eternity; past, present and future

Beginning and the end - alpha and omega

When we look closely at our reflection

In each others’ eyes

We should be reminded that

Where we come from

Spirit, soul and body

Are witnessed in heaven

By Father, Word and Spirit

And witnessed on earth

By spirit, water and blood

Our testimony in turn should be

Faith, hope and love

Honor, Integrity and loyalty

To our origin story

That will carry in our thoughts, breath and words

In the sand and the stars, through generations and years

Despite mysterious treasures and crowns, lived in motherlands

Obliterating shameful ships and auction blocks and slave chains

Echoed in famous speeches, carried out in laws and rights

Proudly displayed in family names

From grandparents, to parents, to children

In households, hometowns and even occupations

It is where we come from

It is our origin story
