Orange and Red

Come in, it's cosy

Orange and red are its colours; pumpkins burgeon, swollen with seeds

Carved into lanterns soon, but not yet; cut up for pie, soon, but not yet

Till more leaves have fallen to litter the streets, we will wait

Once the small demons are dressed, we will carve.

Burning bright, our lanterns defy their history - we want the monsters here

Eating their sweets, grins on their faces, demanding more treats.

Rain batters my windows, requesting an in -

I pull the curtains to silence the din.

Smouldering peat on the fire says I'm home,

Happily going nowhere I don't have to -

Even if you call me three days in advance.

Red and orange are the colours of the flames,

Eerily dancing, the trees, resting; the pie just out of the oven.
