Top Story - October 2023

In response to Poppy's super fun prompt

Like a hot stone of fury

Stuck in the throat.

Congealed phlegm

Choking on the embers

Of resentment –

Like scarlet lips

Whispering in yearning ears

Like a siren

Of sex.

Into the heart

Of a moment.

Laced in layers

Like a memory

Floating through the air

Of belonging.

Like the cheeks

Of shame

Flushing warm -

A secret

Shared in the presence

Of lies.

Like the town

Of an after party

Sprayed in high jinx.

A graffiti wall

Of jubilation.

Like the warfare

Of a broken land

Shot down in bullets

Hitting hard the floor

Of pain.

In the

Death –

Or just.

A Red herring?

slam poetry

Red hot emotions in this one! I loved how the sentence structure broke down throughout the piece and this whole poem just bled red. Beautifully done!

Palpable hot emotions. Anger of red shining through the tiers of broken, whole and mended back together feelings. Really a great representation of the color.

Wow this was an amazing poem, Celia! I could feel the passion behind the words, loved it!

You really capture the danger of red here, that enticing, exciting, horribly risky, wounding blaze of redness.

  • Whoaaaa, this was so intense! I'm so happy you chose red because it's my favourite colour!

Oh damn, Celia. I love that second part, the single words trailing to that punchy end! I feel the slam poetry, for sure; fantastic job! This bit: "Blood Shot Hand Caught In the Dance Red Bull. Died A Death – Or just. A Red herring?"

  • Reading this felt like the song in "Rent" where everyone is having sex ("Contact"), only in this, Angel doesn't die.

This is absolutely stunning Celia! I could picture this being passionately performed on stage because it reads like slam poetry. Every line was incredible and the structure really added to the impact of it. I loved the ending too!! Thanks so much for taking part in the prompt💛

  • Loved the shape and sound of this

I was so drawn into this! It has kind of a musical ebb and flow to it! Beautiful work! 😍

This...is impressive. So impressive. Such a great way to show the connections between red and different things in life. Just, yeah! Great entry. Bravo.

Great poem, so many questions though. What’s making you red? What’s making you palpitate? Death? Who’s? Yours? A friends? And by red herring do you mean you faked your death? Anyway, well written. You’re a great writer!

This is great. I can see the colour in your words. Well done.
