Olives

divine spring

By Harper Lewis Published 6 months ago Updated 6 months ago 1 min read

Nectar in honeyed air, petals

open in the wind, delicate tea olive breezing every breath,

trees greener than fairways, light dappling

rivers, creeks, and traps.

Bunkers and beaches, sand out of

that box into this one.

Rubber souls and iron wills,

silken won’ts and hearts of steel.

Fortune and Ferris, Catherine

at the wheel, Clotho spinning,

Poseidon dissolved to foam. Zeus a swan.

Apollo clutches a laurel branch

while Helios bodysurfs Circe

into the world, Medea fleecing gold.

Helen waves Odysseus ashore;

walls burn, the Styxx breached.

Penelope and Persephone

sip pomegranate champagne,

languishing in a bed

of Athena’s tree,

a ship in the distance,

a tiger in the woods.
