Ode to Why Did this Red-Tailed Hawk Die?

Freedom, in any case, is only possible by constantly striving for it...Albert Einstein

Such sweet birds fill the morning air with chirps and tweets,

But his eerie screech of alarm is gone … his nobility desecrated

By blow flies feasting at his empty all-seeing ever-keen eyes.

How did this sky warrior, this thermal wanderer, die?

This raptor with razor talons, hooked beak and broad wings

To ascend to great heights, face strong winds, unflappable,

Eyes fixed on the ground in a slow controlled dive to strike.

Did this environmental stewart catch a poisoned farm mouse

Or some reptile filled with lead shot in aimless frivolity?

His large streaked body and cinnamon-red coloured tail feathers

In association with independence and spiritual awareness can’t die…

Nor Nature’s intuitive power to balance the prey and the victor.

Live on, dear hawk, with words to protect your right to fly the skies

In freedom in a way that respects the rights of others to be free.
