Ode to Cats

By Emma Louise Cormack

In whispers soft, they come to us,

A purring peace, a velvet calm,

With eyes like moons, they weave our trust,

And wrap our hearts in feline charm.

They slip through doors, these silent friends,

A dance of grace, a shadow's flight,

Their purrs become our heartbeats' blend,

In every quiet, cozy night.

Their laughter leaps in playful bounds,

A joy so pure, a mirth so free,

They claim our laps, our beds, our grounds,

Their eyes reveal the love they see.

But time, the thief, so sly and quick,

Steals moments from our shared embrace,

Their lives are but a candle's wick,

That flickers fast in life's own space.

And when the dusk of their days nears,

We hold them close, our tears now start,

To love a cat is to know fears,

Of saying goodbye with a breaking heart.

They leave us with their silent grace,

A void where once was life's delight,

But in our memories, they trace,

A love that time cannot quite fight.

So here's to cats, our fleeting friends,

Whose love, though brief, is deep and true,

They teach us how to love, then mend,

For in their loss, we see life anew.
