Last calls

The call not loud

but insistent

Come

Bring your season-weary soul

into tenth-month temperate winds

Reprieve that reverberates its finite powers

to forestall negative degrees in 31-day bluster

Find and follow this comfort

through verdant soon-to-wither tunnelled trails

crushing first layers of rustic rustles carpeted and crisp

but do not stop

until the Ospreys’ realm you reach

Hurry

Final flights take-off Afrika bound

Ask with enough reverence

and they might carry your woes

which turn into wishes on the wing

Choose to go

or stay

The Motherland in October

would welcome you

spirit-parched

from a year unfinished of turmoil-mixed slaughter

Tormented cries

for deep rest far away from weighted days

carve tenacity that clings to bone

Draw near

for a slurp-crunch-savor

of pears crab-apples and damsons

A fruit consortium summary by sweetness

since bluish-purple grapes got aspirations galore than just wine

and carry seed belly defiance

to taunt and tease

surely regretted perchance you miss

Stain hands and heart one last time

on blackberries in bursting gulps

Promise you won’t need costumes

care or compromise

beyond Nature’s orchestral symphony

living and breathing its fortissimo signature

through harvests of fleshly artistry

Come now ere the rains return

and fill cellar to pantry provisions

Scurry as ‘tomorrow-won’t-do’ squirrels

bereft of fear every sunrise ‘til first snowfall

Here shed your sorrows

like treasures emerald to gold fire-blessed hues

Nature’s hallelujah begins and ends

in glorious crescendo

with beneficent harvest of ecosystem elegance

Mortality sits between the notes

fortunate to forage Horse Mushroom or Black Trumpet

around woodland undergrowth

after messing over Mama Earth

the whole time

Silent grace needs sincerest prayers

plus praise

for what shall be taught minus words

Surrender to weeks of culmination

Musky scented darkness falling early

Expected—yet all too soon

Pledge yourself

to ‘Come hither’ early night lessons

screeched by a Tawny Owl’s territorial

chilling tune
