I can trace the lunacy of the season

back to 1974

when the masks came out

and one by one

we knocked on every door

some tricks

some treats

some smelly feet

but, never anything healthy - pLeAsE!

October brought childish release

and a chance to stay out late.

some were hand me downs
some were home-made
some years came from the store
but what mattered most
to all of us
was who got the biggest score

reese's, mounds and clark bars

popcorn balls and m&m's

and sometimes daddy drove the car

we'd give the lamest ones to him

one by one we laid them out

real treasures to be sure

you'd mark them so there was no doubt

which pile there was yours

watering eyes and runny noses

rosey cheeks and grins with teeth

some parents lifted masks, exposin'

who was hidin' underneath

yeah, if I could escape into a memory

and visit me back then

October and that energy

is the first place I'd begin
