she keeps a small garden

for the worms and crows

for when life gets hard

just to watch the weeds grow

she puts out a pumpkin

and some mums for a smile

and old chair and buckskin

to keep her warm for awhile

the frost settles in on her pumpkins at night

the crows and the worms nestle too

a crisp blanket spreads out, all lacy and white

the scarecrow is enjoying the view

the sun rises slow in the morning

yawns and stretches, chasing shadows away

the world around her transforming

as October puts her wares on display

sips warm cider from her old coffee cup

then she digs a little in the dirt

some wishes are made on the rainbow for luck

but she watches as it covers the earth

every tree, every flower getting dressed up

the last hurrah before the long slumbered sleep

it's the season she can't get enough of

and she drifts off counting leaves and not sheep
