October has a leaf-strewn floor, and golden light beyond its door.
Step through the gold; let branches sway and shake their summer clothes away.
Let honeyed sunlight warm your skin; Stand still enough to take it in.
Breathe woodsmoke drifting down the street; Taste pumpkin spice, warm, rich and sweet.
Let crisp leaves crack beneath your shoes; There’s gold enough for you to choose.
Bring handfuls home in red and brown; Set all that fallen glory down.
Along the sill, beside your chair, leave little bits of autumn there.
Let lamplight catch each copper vein and call the sunshine back again.
As small hands spread their gathered gold, feel warmth that little hands can hold.
Let branches rest; let roots lie deep. We have a little sun to keep.
A glow to hold through everything, to warm us through the wait for spring.
