Nothing Happened

History's Favorite Sentence.

By Violet HamiltonPublished 3 months ago 1 min read

**Nothing Happened**

History is an excellent liar.

It edits.

It trims.

It replaces screams

with footnotes.

It files away names

inside forgotten boxes.

Then it closes the lid.

**Nothing happened.**

A bruise fades.

A witness dies.

A photograph burns.

A generation forgets.

Silence,

contrary to popular belief,

is not empty.

It is crowded.

**Nothing happened.**

A family skips one story

at every holiday.

A town renames a street.

A nation rewrites a chapter.

A child asks,

"What was here before?"

The adults clear their throats.

Someone changes the subject.

**Nothing happened.**

The strange thing about truth

is that it waits.

Patiently.

It doesn't beg to be believed.

It simply survives

until someone

is brave enough

to remember.

Then the silence cracks.

The dust rises.

The names return.

And the sentence

that protected everyone

protects no one.

**Nothing happened.**
