Not A Regular Rabbit
Magical Purpose
It was just a regular rabbit
But papa said that it brought him good luck
It helped him to conquer his habits
So, he paid the owner a buck
Traveling around with the circus
A magic man with a magic black hat
Papa said the rabbit had purpose
It was meant for much more than that
He made an offer to purchase the rabbit
The magic man set back and laughed
Papa begged him please, please could he have it
Again he said papa was daft
He pretended to agree
And each time papa would try
The rabbit turned into three
The magic man laughed till he cried
So then, papa pulled out a lighter
And a brand new deck of cards
Allowing the flame to burn higher
so the magic man would let down his guard
Papa said, if I can trick you
Then you must set that sweet rabbit free
When the flame flickers blue
He will be free to come home with me
The magic man gave thought for a minute
And then, in the blink of an eye
He answered, go on then, do it
I’d really like to see you try
Because I am the ultimate master
There’s no magic under the sun
Because my hands are so much faster
You see, you can't out do me, son
Papa smiled at me and he winked
And patted the rabbit on its head
And before anyone could blink
The rabbit just fell over dead
Papa's flame began to burn blue
Until the magic man was quite irate
Off of the handle he flew
His eyes ablaze, flickering with hate
He took the small rabbit and threw him
As far as his power permitted
And as the blue flickering grew dim
Papa said, well now you’ve done it
He collected the small rabbit's carcass
Wrapped it softly in his arms
Looked at me, he said, make a wish
Go on now, don’t be alarmed
And I said, as my eyes were pleading
As tender tears warmed my face
Look papa, the rabbit is breathing
I can see the beating in his chest
The magic man tried to stop him
But the rabbit refused
And he spoke with a grin
I am no longer your muse
You see you wouldn’t know magic
Though you held it in your grasp
Your disbelief is tragic
He then looked at papa and asked
Will you cherish the treasure
And keep the magic alive
Papa smiled and said, I sure will
I’ve always been ready to try
So we made our way home
The small rabbit, papa and I
Where magic grows wild in our garden
And hope is connected with vines
