No Resolve

Pride Fools Us All

Cloudy passenger window

Heat venting the windshield

Rain tapping the sunroof

Deep breaths caught up in the thick energy

The question lingering over their heads

Hour of sitting

Her hand in her lap

His on the armrest

He’s reaching but the space between

There is no answer

A call to move

Yet

Moving closer isn’t enough

Where will…

She can’t ask anymore

Pushing down what needs to come up

Words crowding his mind

Clawing at the inside of his skull

Each word pressing at his teeth

His lips catch them before their tempting release

Just maybe

It has gone too deep

The engine rattles

Calling their attention back

To the sitting

The closeness of being near and so far away

The final reason to stay

He still won’t say

The answer

Her eyes sliding to his

Looking down at his hand

Fingers still open

Hoping to hold hers

Too late; the sowing of longing has taken over

Harvest of unresolved emotions

Questions

The question

His eyes stay on what’s ahead

Hers back out the window

His lips part

Sounds slip out

Mumble her name, make it plain

All she hears

The rain

Louder than the beating of her heart

Her love reaches for his hand

But pride lets the ghost of resentment grow

Jaw clenching; she balls her fist

Eyes shut tight at his reflection

Opening them only to focus on the rain again

The answer

A frosted-over need

What about…

No more questions

His hand slowly moving back to his lap

Fingertips rubbing his jeans

Sweat left behind

A shudder ripples through them both

He swallows the answer

She buries the question
