Taught as a child
Watch-Look-Listen
stay safe crossing the street.
Taught as teen
to cross that street
with keys laced through my fingers.
Taught as a mother
spare key under a rock
for the door, just in case.
Cars now have buttons
Doors have apps
Fingers forming fists around the rock.
What are the lessons, now?
What keys can lace between my fingers?
What doors will open for me now?
Where is my safety?
My teacher?
My just in case?
What do we teach the children?
