No Color

Till I saw your eyes

My eyes work just fine so to speak

But there is no color that comes into them that I can see

The world in gray scale is how I live

It’s all I’ve ever known just how it is

~

Science has come such a long way

They’ve made glasses for those who don’t know color

Given them a way to see

Alas far too expensive for me

~

I’ve met the most wonderful partner that I could have

Kind, compassionate, and understanding

The whole package in one person

What else could I ask?

~

Twenty years have passed

I know the color of my partner’s eyes

But sadly I do not truly know at all

Just a word that tells me nothing how sad

~

My child brought a pair of glasses today

They told me to close my eyes and put them on

Not to open them until I was told

I laughed and played along

~

Finally I am told to open them

My partner sits directly in front of me

With eyes a brilliant green

What I’ve been told emeralds would look like if I could see

~

I find in that moment I fall in love all over again

Like a lightning bolt from the heavens

Striking my mind sending shivers down my spine

With just seeing the color of your eyes

My love grows a thousand times

~
