Never Photograph the Eclipse of Someone’s Heart

Never photograph the eclipse of someone’s heart,
For you may capture shadows tearing them apart,
The camera sees the darkness crossing the light,
But never knows what someone carries through the night.

You can photograph the moon,
You can photograph the sun,
You can capture every colour,
Before the day is done.

But hearts are different things,
They don’t reveal their pain,
They hide behind a smile,
Then disappear like rain.

He took a photograph of her,
Standing beneath the sky,
She smiled when he looked through the lens,
But something lived behind her eyes.

He thought he’d caught her happiness,
A beautiful moment frozen still,
But when he looked again at home,
He wondered what the picture didn’t reveal.

There was a darkness in her face,
A shadow underneath the glow,
Something she had carefully hidden,
Something she didn’t want him to know.

He realised then a photograph,
Can never tell the whole story,
It can capture someone’s face,
But never capture all their glory.

It cannot show the nights they cried,
Or every battle they have fought,
It cannot show the words they swallowed,
Or every lonely thought.

So never photograph the eclipse,
That passes through someone’s heart,
Because you may capture the shadow,
But never where the darkness starts.

And if someone gives you a smile,
Don’t assume that they are fine,
Sometimes the brightest faces,
Are hiding the darkest skies.

The camera may capture the light,
And everything that can be seen,
But someone’s heart has hidden rooms,
Where no photograph has ever been.

So put the camera down sometimes,
And simply stay awhile,
For sometimes what a person needs,
Is not a photograph, but someone who sees beyond the smile.
