Never Gently

You live as long as you’re remembered

Only the dead forget the war

The past and future have been tethered

All that we do has been done before

The weakest man becomes a bullet

The bully mocks a brilliant mind

We all make choices to get through it

To see us through the worst of times

We all have intimate relationships

In the course of life and death

Salty tears cascade a lip

Following our first and final breaths

In between we celebrate

And capture the glorious proof of life

Before we learn to contemplate

Not going gently into that good night
