NEIGHBOURS HAS ENDED

I watched them grow with me through every passing year,

from the days I rushed the shopping just to make it home in time,

sitting down with my heart settling into their stories again,

feeling like I was stepping into a place that knew my name.

I remember running for that bus with my baby in my arms,

wanting to reach my niece’s house before the episode began,

that tiny newborn now forty and living her own full life,

yet those memories still glow warm as ever inside me.

I filled my days around the comfort of that half hour,

cleaning and tidying faster so I could claim my seat,

waiting for that theme tune like it opened my own front door,

knowing those faces better than some I’ve met in real life.

Fridays always felt empty because it never came on,

and I would miss them the moment the credits ended,

counting down the hours till I could sit with them again,

feeling that small hollow space where they should have been.

And now the screen has dimmed and the street has gone quiet,

yet in my heart they still walk past each open window,

still wave, still laugh, still live the way they always did,

as if they never stopped welcoming me into their world.

It feels like losing family you have loved for a lifetime,

a gentle ache that sits under every breath I take today,

trying to hold the tears down because someone might see,

but they fall anyway because something beautiful has ended.

So I whisper a wish that someone, somewhere hears this,

that one day a door will open and let the story live again,

because after all these years it is part of who I am,

and the street I grew up with deserves to shine once more.

And please, bring it back, let it find a new home to breathe,

maybe ITV, maybe BBC, someone who sees its worth,

someone who knows what it means to all of us who watched,

someone who understands a nation still waiting for its return.
