Nearer My God To Thee

The sinking of the Titanic

Nearer My God To Thee

The sea was quiet before the wound,

A black stretch holding its breath,

Steel confidence cut through the dark,

Unaware of what waited below.

They walked in silk and certainty,

Laughter drifting through chandeliers,

Music rising like something sacred,

While the cold kept its silence.

The ice did not shout its warning,

It whispered against the hull,

A long tear beneath the surface,

A sentence written in freezing ink.

There was a pause, almost gentle,

As if the world had reconsidered,

Then the truth began to lean forward,

And nothing could pull it back.

Shoes slipped on polished floors,

Voices changed shape in an instant,

Names were called into the rising dark,

But answers grew thin and distant.

The water came like a quiet thief,

Climbing staircases without haste,

Touching gold, touching skin,

Taking warmth without a sound.

They said the band played on,

Fingers stiff with devotion,

A hymn breaking through the panic,

Nearer, my God, to Thee.

Boats fell away half empty,

Heavy with fear and disbelief,

While the great ship bent its pride,

And lowered its voice to the deep.

Hands reached but could not hold,

Promises froze between breaths,

The stars watched without mercy,

Sharp and endless above them.

Then the final surrender came,

A groan pulled from iron and bone,

The night closed over every cry,

And the sea kept what it was given.

Morning found only echoes,

Chairs, silence, scattered ghosts,

And somewhere beneath that cold vast dark,

The hymn still drifted without an end.

And still the ocean does not speak,

It keeps their names in frozen dark,

No grave, no fire, no final prayer,

Only silence, and God, and the deep.

Then God did not come down in fire,

He stayed in the breath they spent,

In the last grip that would not loosen,

And the dark that did not answer.

Then nothing answered back at all,

No light broke through that final depth,

Only the weight of ending breath,

And the cold that finished everything.
