So, I wrote these poems for my son, years ago.
My son was born with two rare genetic syndromes.
Poem 1:
"Mummy Why?"
Mummy, why are they laughing?
When you laugh Mummy, you make me laugh too.
We have fun.
They, make me cry.
It’s not funny Mummy...It hurts.
Mummy, why are they pointing?
When you point Mummy, you’re showing me something.
You’re teaching me.
They’re not showing me anything.
They’re just pointing Mummy…at me.
Mummy, why are they running away?
When you run Mummy, it’s towards me, arms stretched wide.
You scoop me up.
They’re running away.
They’re running away Mummy…from me.
Mummy, why do they push me away?
When I lean on your legs Mummy, you help me.
You help me stand with you.
They don’t help me.
They let me fall Mummy…to the ground.
Mummy, why do they say I’m “different”?
When you say I’m different Mummy, it’s with pride.
You’re proud of me Mummy.
They’re not proud of me.
They make me feel small Mummy...they make me feel sad.
Mummy, why don’t I have any friends?
Is it my fault you don’t have friends either Mummy?
I’ll be your friend Mummy.
And you can be mine.
We only need each other for now...you’ll always be my Mummy.
Poem 2:
”Found!”
Mummy, we found them.
They don't laugh at me.
Mummy they laugh with me.
They like me Mummy.
Mummy we found them.
They don't point at me.
Mummy they call me to them.
They like me Mummy.
Mummy we found them.
They don't run from me.
Mummy they run with me, we play.
They like me Mummy.
Mummy we found them.
They don't push me away.
Mummy they pull me in, hold me up.
They like me Mummy.
Mummy we found them.
They don't say I'm different.
Mummy they say I'm just like them.
They like me Mummy.
We found them Mummy.
Friends.
Mummy I have friends.
They love me Mummy.
Just like you love me.
