Rushing up the long circular drive
I had to get inside if I wanted to thrive
Sirens were going off all about the town
Destructive chaos all around
I bang upon the great oaken doors
I implore to be let indoors
All I need is a simple place to rest
Nothing too fancy, not even your best
A place in a darkened corner would be fine
Don’t worry, I won’t drink your wine
Would you please open up?
I’m afraid I’ll be blown up.
🚪
As I stand beneath the setting moon
I think to myself, Soon
On the other side of the door, I hear
Someone laughs and jeers
I cry out and beg
I tell them I’m not a bad egg
To please open the door
And I’ll sleep on the basement floor
Just ignore my blood-soaked gown
I can hear screams all about the town
Would you please let me in?
I’m scared this is the end.
🌕
Through the door, I sense your breath
With the rising of the sun, I feel my death
My hand on your door, I knock again
Closer come the shouts of the patrolmen
I can hear the baying of the hounds
As they scent evil upon the grounds
I fear being torn to shreds
I need to change from my soiled threads
With each beseeching plea I utter
I perceive you softening like butter
In my mind’s eye, you unlatch the lock
But pausing, you look at the hands of the clock
🗝️
Shaking your head, you back away
You holler out, “Leave, you can’t stay.”
I tell them that they must
Or that soon I will be dust
There’s no one there to respond
I had to take shelter before the sun dawned
Growling, I slammed my fist upon the door
Shattering the stained glass upon the porch floor
Evily, I smile with this turn of events
Inhaling, I took in their earthy scents
I take advantage of the missing glass
Through the gaping hole, I yelled to let me pass
🌅
I promised them fame and riches unlimited
Looking to the East, I saw my time was limited
My time was short
It’s too late to abort
My mission must be completed
Our side will be undefeated
My nerves were frayed
To the Red Father I prayed
Someone must give
This night I must outlive
I restate my promise
I offer longevity, like us
💰
Directly, I hear the patter of little feet
Hope rose up inside me in a sweet heat
Seeing a small child of about five
My senses came alive
Pleasantly, I asked the tot to let me in
Gently, I nodded as I gave my sweetest grin
When the boy smiled back, I knew he was mine
Taking a step inside, I knew it was time to dine
