Shadows lingered.

Carl had battles in his life to fight

And some lessons taught to guide him right.

His friends laughted at him, caused him pain,

Calling him names again and again.

He struggled in school in so many ways.

All his teachers seldom gave him praise.

His parents did not know what to do.

He was always bored; their love was true.

He liked the way his life used to be.

His friends embraced him, let him be free.

He longed for the moments left behind,

A happier place inside his mind.

There were many joys he used to find.

People thought he was one of a kind..

A light within that others could see

With a quiet strength in who he'd be.

He feels he is followed all the time.

He once had dreams, great mountains to climb.

Shadows lingered, circling near the ground.

When he tried to speak, there were no sounds.

He paused as he faced the road ahead,

Not bound by hurtful words his friends said.

The shadows lost their grip and their hold

As his courage slowly turned to gold.

Now he chooses not to turn around

As he lifts his eyes above the ground.

His past life no longer holds its place,

And he moves forward with steady grace.

Now he chooses not to turn around

As he lifts his eyes above the ground.

His past life no longer holds its place,

And he moves forward with steady grace.
