Miss Maple's Hot Pocket

A poem about elaborate dinner plans, sensory overload, and eating raw tomatoes in bed

By Michele NampalliPublished 8 months ago • 1 min read

I walked around biting my incisors today

The supermarket was too bright

I didn’t want cheese for dinner

Or anything to do with dairy

I picked up a sack of cashews

a packet of garlic

two large tomatoes

an artful jug of pinot grigio-

holding it secure at the neck

one third down

to roam fluorescent aisles

I’ll make vodka sauce with wine

Soaked nuts will make it creamy

Decisions

Still biting incisors as I walked home

The winter wind set my jaw

I walked through my door

slipped out of warm clouds

hung up the heavy goose jacket

and poured a glass to my face-

washed it down with three cashews

cleaned a tomato on my sleeve

took a bite

and went to bed chewing

no longer incised

I’ll make the fricelli pugliesi

tomorrow

This space is breath for my sensitivity. The poems come fully formed. I've known for quite some time now that my art is about receiving more than creation...its the most natural way I know to process my inner world. It started when I was 7.
