Mirror

A Poem

By Emma DeJongPublished 7 years ago 1 min read

An artists’ work is a reflection

Of their mind, their thoughts, their own connections

Between what they see and how they feel

And through their work it does reveal

Their true feelings and point of view

If you look real closely you’ll find the clues.

But it’s just the same as me and you.

Our words combine to make this hue

A color is there but it has no name

the color of truth cannot be tamed.

But wait, pause, hold up

Have you ever asked yourself, from where your thoughts came?

Did they appear out of nowhere, are they true to your name?

Can you honestly say

Its black n white and not grey?

Here… let me replay:

When you look in the mirror, tell me what do you see?

Is it you, is it true?

“of course!” you say “how could that not be?”

Look more closely and then try an’ tell me

That you are just you, he is he, she is she,

The world is all us and we all the world

Held together as one, wrapped up like we’re pearled

The truth is we all

are simply installed

with power that truly is binding.

because the work of an art,

is solely a part,

of a whole that is all but confining.

Nothing can be made of none,

and everything does come from some.

All mirrors do serve as defining.

There’s no time to waste,

So get face to face,

And embrace your place,

Don’t just take up space,

But stay on the chase,

To find your true face,

Or at least just a trace.

Make your statement, make a name,

Speak with paint, song, dance, words, it’s all the same.

Now blink. One. Two. Three.

Look in the mirror. What do you see?

Is it you? Is it me? Is it us?

Soon you’ll see.
