Midnight's Melody

Night's visitor

By Dan R FowlerPublished about a year ago 1 min read

Midnight’s Melody

I had a visitor come calling last midnight,

From somewhere in the darkness, it caused great fright.

But there was no stopping the knocking at the door,

As I slid my legs off the bed and onto the floor.

It’s not the first time I’ve been visited at night,

Over and over again one would think it was to fight.

This specter came creeping chilling me to the core,

Causing my excitement to increasingly soar.

Fingers that danced upon idle keys,

Tinkling the black and white ribbon that I could see.

It played a song I’d often heard and hummed,

Languishing in the darkness my body it numbed.

Frightfully I gestured for it to finish,

But on it played determined not to vanish.

I watched it float and shimmer in the shadows,

This specter, this midnight mirage, dressed in dark clothes.

With each tick of the clock, it remained in view,

Singing and dancing for me without a clue.

Yon vapor or spirit or midnight mirage,

Gathered together each sound of a montage.

This music is midnight, this melody all too familiar,

Was one that I’d heard in times past so unsettling similar.

It was a calling, a signal, one that was so bold.

It sang to me of life and of me getting old.
