She wonders if it's the same for everyone.

Together, content, nothing is wrong, but happy is debatable. Photo courtesy of Zinkevych on iStock.

she wonders when her friends

say they've been in love

with the same person for ten years

if that fire still actually burns strong.

she wonders if for others,

it hasn't ebbed from a wildfire

to a candle's tiny flickering flame,

straining to stay alight

when the pooling wax threatens to put it out.

she wonders if

there's something wrong with her

for being the candle flame

when others are a wildfire.

she wonders how she can write

about that all-consuming, blazing storm

when she scarcely recalls the situation

or how it felt to burn that way.

it's been too many years.
