MASHED-UP THOUGHTS

My mashed-up thoughts were bubbling,
Inside my head at three,
So I tipped them in a saucepan,
And cooked them up for tea.

I peeled a Monday morning,
And chopped a memory small,
I boiled the time I lost my shoes,
And nearly ate them all.

I added lumps of laughter,
And butter made from rhyme

I stirred them with a wooden spoon,
Until they lost all time.

One tiny pea was childhood,
It rolled beneath the chair,
I chased it with a silver fork,
But childhood wasn’t there.

An angry thought became the gravy,
It spat across the plate,
It covered up a happy dream,
That had arrived too late.

I mashed a kiss from long ago,
With someone’s last goodbye,
The mixture sang a love song,
Then poked me in the eye.

The moon came down for supper,
And asked me for a taste,
I gave her all my worried thoughts,
She ate them up in haste.

My head grew quiet for a while,
The saucepan ceased to shout,
A last thought jumped from the mash,
And tried to wriggle out.

It bounced across the table,
And headed for the door,
I grabbed a spoon and chased it,
As it rolled across the floor.

I reached to save my final thought,
Before it could escape,
My little dog ate every word,
And licked the empty plate.
