Markers

Never Forgotten, Always Loved

By Margaret BrennanPublished 11 months ago 1 min read

MARKERS

for my dad and my brother.

Never Forgotten

Always Loved

I walked past the row of markers,

A loved one’s name to find.

Emotions were like rivers

Running through my mind.

*

A little flag was nestled

Alongside every name:

The young and old, together!

What a pity! What a shame!

*

As memories filled my every thought,

From the corner of my eye

I saw a woman grab her heart,

And then begin to cry.

*

The woman’s cries grew weaker,

As she crumbled to the ground,

I rushed to lend a helping hand,

And see the name she found.

*

I abandoned my self-pity,

As my eyes, then opened wide.

There were her markers, husband and son

Lying side by side.
