Today, June 19th, I decided to watch, "High on the Hog:How African American Cuisine Transformed America," on Netflix. The following thought was birthed from this amazing and truth revealing documentary, hosted by Stephen Satterfield.

Making Dew
Cast offs, leftovers, making something from your nothing.
My survival was no concern as feasts were consumed just steps away.
The cries of hunger drove me as I prepared your scraps given as if an act of generosity.
Stir or starve my mantra. I did the most with the least.
Stirring, seasoning singing making heaven in my mouth
filling bellies that would tell the stories of generations and nations
because in spite of the scraps, we gathered one, then two then many
making mountains out of molehills makeshift caldrons fired from the bottom up.
Sweet and sweat, savory and spicy something from less than nothing!
You turned your back walking away with the bounty leaving me the scraps.
So, stirring and seasoning sweet savory and kissed with sweat and hot sauce spices, I made do!
Yes, Lawd I made dew!
About the Creator
Cynthia Fields
I adore words and I love what happens when we grab them, sleep with them, holler and scream and laugh at them! I love what happens when we throw them in the air and watch them fall magically from our minds onto paper!
