Love Isn't an Exhausting Game
Why Dating an Emotionally Intelligent Person Changes Everything
If you’ve ever dated someone even slightly intelligent, you’ll know how big the difference is.
A lasting relationship isn't about who is more tolerant or who is more accommodating; it's about both people knowing how to regulate their emotions, avoiding throwing the ball out of bounds with a single sentence. A truly intelligent person will subtly observe your emotional state and, in a way you can handle, return the ball to you.
You only understand this as you grow older: a good relationship isn't about constantly explaining, trying to please, or giving in. In a good relationship, you don't need to explain things to the point of exhaustion; they understand where you're stuck. You don't have to constantly pick up the pieces, fill in the gaps, or salvage every situation.
Being with an immature person is exhausting. You throw out a sentence, and they can't handle it; you express a little grievance, and they think you're causing trouble; you just want to communicate properly, and they deflect the issue—leaving you chasing after the ball while trying to soothe their emotions.
But being with an intelligent person isn't like that.
They aren't infallible, nor are they always perfect, but they understand that relationships require give-and-take. They won't treat your emotions as a nuisance, nor will they disregard your feelings. They will adjust their tone, leave room to maneuver, and make you feel like you aren't the only one putting in the effort.
Love is a lot like playing tennis. If you encounter someone who is too inept, they either can't return the ball or they swing wildly, leaving you constantly bending over to pick it up. If you encounter someone who is too self-centered and domineering, every shot feels like a battle to win; it's no longer a relationship—it's a competition.
The truly right person is capable and knows how to respect boundaries. They know how to keep the rally going, preventing you from feeling overwhelmed or deliberately embarrassed.
Therefore, when choosing a partner, you really need to choose someone smart.
It's not about how highly educated they are or how eloquent they are, but whether they have understanding, empathy, and the ability to adjust themselves within the relationship.
Love should feel relaxing, enjoyable, and supportive—not like a daily exam or a cleanup session after every interaction.
If you can avoid having to pick up the ball all the time, don't settle for less.
Some people can't handle you—not because you're too hard to understand, but because they simply don't know how to play the game.
