Love is what love can be

And it can never be enough.

Love is what love can be

As much as I would like to

Pretend

That loving you

Is the most I can do

I have to say: it is not.

Love is never enough

Because love does not have to be;

Respect, honor, joy, humor, comprehension

Are equally important parts of any relation

Why is it that we think

That love will save the world?

It will not.

Because it can not

Love won't even save us

From us or others

And it is not supposed to;

Love must be what love is.

Beautifully terrible,

Uniquely average,

The sound on the background

Of life itself

That tiny little thing

To which all of us

Dance to;

Maybe love, after all, has got to be enough.

Not enough for life;

But enough for the lovers.
